Beginners' Yoga Stretches

Advanced Yoga stretches may be a bit too much for the average beginner, so here are some beginners' Yoga stretches. Keep in mind that, as with any form of exercise, you should not only consider seeing a doctor first but also, when you are practicing Yoga, make sure you do a proper warm up to prepare your body for the exercises to come so that you do not risk causing yourself an injury.

There are lots of Yoga stretches that you can do but you shouldn't feel like you're getting information overload, once you get into Yoga seriously, you will realize that it is a thing that you spend your whole life doing, so you have lots of time! Over that time, as your ability progresses, you will be able to do more advanced stretches that you couldn't do as a beginner.

Before we go into some poses, you should know that are different types of poses that include balancing poses, backbends, seated and standing poses and resting poses.

The Downward Dog:

Get on your hands and knees. Push back and raise your hips, therefore straightening your legs and stretching your arms out in front of you. Allow your head to hang between your arms and move your shoulder blades down toward your feet.

This stretch is done often in Yoga classes and may even be the first that you do in a Yoga class.

The Lunge Pose:

Pretty straight forward this one! You should move from the Downward Facing Dog, bring your right food forward, bringing your knee over the ankle, so that your leg is in a right angled position. Have your arms down the front of your legs and have your fingers touching your toes. Straighten out and extend our back. Hold for a few deep breaths and repeat with the other leg to even it out.

The Staff Pose:

This is what all other seated poses come from; it's the basis of all seated poses. Simply sit with your legs out in front of you, pointing away from your body. Sit up straight, making your spine as long as you can, with your shoulders directly above your hips. This pose is also known as Dandasana.

If you are doing these beginners' Yoga stretches at home, you would do well to get a mat on which to practice so that you are comfortable and you enjoy the Yoga experience.
